All good things come to an end, and March 2009 saw Fastline ceasing the intermodal services supposedly due to poor loadings in the recession, and 56301/302 drained and stored whilst 303 was returned to RVEL and stored at Derby. After a few weeks of irregular running, 56303 worked what turned out to be the final 4O90 on March 27th. Rapid removal of branding and nameplates, often in a brutal fashion, sees the locos looking bit of a state. the lines were removed in late April/early May 2005 with the removal of 87003/7/8/21/23/25/26/33 to Cotswold Rail at Oxley, 5/15/24/35 to Caerwent (storage although unfortunatle probable scrapping) and 29/30/31 to WB for further storage. In 8/76 she was taken into WN stock and put to work on the WCML. Gained 87001's "Stephenson" plates in '77. However sectorisation saw 101 become a solitary freight seven in RfD colours, and unnamed, from 92ish. With EWS taking over, the loco returned to blue colurs and was renamed at CE open day in 94. However the loco spent long periods out of service. Her last working was on 18/1/99, her last passenger working a few months earlier, and she was stored due to a serious traction motor fire. Purchased by Harry Neadle, the loco moved to Barrow Hill, where it was unfortunatly promptly cut up by 1/02. Farewell. Saturday 6 December 2003: 87101, "unique" to say the least! Virgin just do not have a clue do they? Loco didn't take well to the new name (no surprise) and only worked a few times before being stood down as WN/WB spares loco. Last working believed to be 25/9/04, 1735 Liverpool-Euston Moved to MOD Caerwent for "secure storage" but sadly cut in Autumn '05...RIP.... Its "real" colours made it a favourite with both photters and bashers alike during the last year or so prior to being donated to the NRM York where it was put on display having arrived under its own power, what a waste... Spare at Rugby 260305 87001 on the 1310 Euston-Brum at Leighton 060405. Wow, a proper livery! 87001 makes a surprise appearance on G00 280505. It was given a lovely "Revised Porterbrook" livery of purple and white. This brough with it the curse of long periods out of use (as with 55016) and it took almost a month to leave WN in passenger service. Personally, I think 90002 would have been a better loco to be repainted, it being a joke engine anyway! Despite the livery it became one of the stronger class members through 2005, at one point working for 31 days on the trot, and then provided the entertainment for the latter part of 2006 - see the "1G21 show" collection for more of that... Optomism of a comeback was shattered by the gen that was giving its traction motors to 87007 to allow it to return to service.. Moved to NC, presumably for spares on 13/10/04 by, oh dear, 90014! Languished on Clown Point until moved to join its friends at Long Marston on 11/05/06 Here is a selection of phots from both this and previous guises.
